Maltese With a small toy-like body and long silky white hair, Maltese is one of the most loved dog breeds in Singapore. Maltese are ideal for interior living with their cuteness, charming personality, adaptability, and non-shedding coat. However, despite their gentle nature, they can bark vigorously to alert you about strangers or noises around. Personality: Gentle, lively, forms close bonds. Grooming: Non-shedding coat. The white hair needs regular brushing and combing. Activity Level: Moderate Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years Mongrels (Singapore Special Dog) Singapore Special Dog, sometimes referred to as Mongrels (mixed-breeds), isn’t actually a breed but a term used for local mixed-breed dogs. They don’t have officially recognised purebred ancestors as they are believed to be the descendants of free-breeding village dogs. Being a local breed each Singapore special looks different and they come in all sizes, colours, and patterns. Personality: They don’t have a generic personality, their behaviour varies as per the environment they grow up in. Grooming: Require general care and grooming. Brushing needs may vary as per their coat type. Activity Level: Moderate to high as they are habitual of roaming and walking. Life Expectancy: 15 years or more Pomeranian Pomeranians commonly called “PomPom” are another popular choice of Singaporeans for a home pet. The small body, fluffy fur, playful nature, and foxy look appeal to a lot of people. While they have a lively personality, they bark a lot. However, when given proper training, they become great companions for you and your family. Personality: Friendly and playful Grooming: Moderate shedding. They have a double-layer coat which needs brushing and combing at least twice a week. Activity Level: Moderate to high Life Expectancy: 12 to 16 years Shih Tzu With its origin in Tibet and China, the Shih Tzu is a small dog, with an underbite feature, and a silky coat. Its name “Shih Tzu” literally means “Lion dog” which fits perfectly as they have a long coat with fast-growing hair. They are prone to heat stroke since they have a flat face shape. Personality: Outgoing, playful, affectionate Grooming: Low shedding. The fast-growing hair requires regular brushing and combing. Activity Level: Moderate Life Expectancy: 10 to 16 years Poodle Originating from Germany, their “teddy bear” look is such that as soon as you look at them, you can’t help but say “Aww.” It’s like they leave paw imprints on your heart. Poodles are very active, adaptable, and highly intelligent, making them easy to train. Personality: Friendly, outgoing, loyal, and intelligent.
